In this article we review the works of authors who seek to cover the most important events in American drama of a certain period, open the main ideological and artistic content of the most important works that had a significant impact on the development of American drama and theater.

Keywords: ideological and artistic content, American drama and theater, American literature, modern dramatists, genre varieties, world literature.

The history of American drama and theater more than once attracted the attention of American literary critics. Many critical research works are written in this area. There are many dictionaries and reference books for general readers and students.

First, we should note the major thorough works. The authors attempt to cover the most important events in American drama of a certain period, reveal the basic ideological and artistic content of the most important works that have had a significant impact on the development of American drama and theater. These works include the research work of Ruby Cohn "New American playwrights of 1960-1990" [5].This small-volume edition contains a summary of practically all the most important phenomena in the American literature of the period, summarized by topic and raised problems (political drama, the plays of black Americans, and others). In spite of its briefness in reviews and assessments, that work claims to be a serious academic approach. Authors of preface Bruce King and Adele King argued that "Modern dramatists are written for people interested in modern theatre who prefer concise, intelligent studies of drama and dramatists, without jargon and an excess of footnotes" [5, p.8]

We can also include the work of Alan Downer "Fifty years of American drama1900-1950" to this type of research. Here the researcher assorts the material on genre principle (folk drama, American comedy, etc.) [6, p.32]. Gerald Berkowitz in his research spans the entire 20th century embracing also the end of the previous century. In his subsections of the history of American drama in the most important periods (1890-1930, 1930-1945, and 1975-1990 1945-1960,1960-1975), the author tries to identify the most characteristic features in the works of American playwrights of a specific period. Critic argued that a truly American drama and the theater formed only in the 20th century, butit is highly controversial. Gerald Berkowitz particularly writes: "The American drama is, for all practical purposes, the twentieth-century American drama. There were plays written and performed on the American continent well before there was a United States, and during the nineteenth century the American theatre was widespread and active / But, as was also true in much of Europe, it was rare exceptions. Not the home of a particularly rich or ambitious literature" [4, p.1].

Thomas Adler used the same principle in his book "American Drama 1940-1960", where the research is devoted both to creativity of individual American playwrights of the second half of the 20thcentury (U. Inge, Eugene O'Neill, L. Hellman, T. Williams and others) and to genre variety of American drama [3, p.29].

There are monographs of American scholars on narrower topics specific to the history of drama in the United States. For example, a study of Patricia Schroeder «The Presence of the Past in Modern American Drama" refers to the perception of the contemporary writers of events relating to the history of the American past, and the development of psychology of the typical American [9, p.64].

Julie Adam develops the theme of heroism in modern American drama; she relies on the plays of Miller, T. Williams, O'Neill and Anderson. The extensive bibliography of monograph containing virtually all the important research in this area deserves special attention [2, p.33].

The American literary studies contain the research devoted to individual plays that have become classic examples in the history of American drama. John Hurrell’s book "Two American Tragedies" contains not only a deep analysis of two prominent American plays ("Death of a Salesman" by Arthur Miller and "A Streetcar Named Desire" by Tennessee Williams), but also a cognitive "paraliterary" material.

The book contains a review of the play, the information about the productions and performances. The author gives brief essays on the creative work of the two authors, making generalizations about the significance of these works not only for the US but also for the entire world literature [8, p.17].

A number of studies on the history of the United States drama embrace issues of regional and ethnic specifics of American drama. In particular, critics often refer to the question about the specifics of the drama of black Americans. We may mention the works of Doris Abramson "Negro playwrights in American Theatre 1925-1959" and a collection of critical essays "Theatre of black Americans," compiled by Errol Hill [1, p.34].

Of particular interest are the anthologies of critical materials and literary manifestos, interviews of American playwrights. We can note such publications as "American Voices" (compiled Esther Harriott), "Talking about the scene," edited by Philip C. Kolin and Kullman [7, p.89]. All above mentioned proves that the interest in American drama continues unabated.
