Conference (from Medieval Latin conferentia - from Latin confero - bring together) - a meeting, a consultation of representatives of any organizations, groups or states, as well as individuals, esp. scientists, to discuss certain issues.

Academic conferences are an organizational form of scientific activity when scientists (more rarely students) gather to discuss issues on a particular topic. The status of a conference is between those of a seminar and a congress.

Types of academic conferences:

  • - Theoretical conference
  • - Research and practice conference
  • - Research and technology conference

Echomail conferences (echos) are a form of public communication in the FidoNet network. FidoNet is a non-commercial amateur network and a mainly self-governing community, where coordination and conflict resolution are carried out by the elected and/or appointed coordinators in accordance with FidoNet Policy and other documents (in this work the structures of coordinators are considered only in connection with their relations with echos moderators).
Echos are generally accessible streams of messages on certain subjects that are transferred from one system to another.

Web conferencing are technologies and tools for online meetings and real time team-working via the Internet. Web conferencing allows to conduct online presentations, collaborate on documents and applications, browse sites, watch videos and images simultaneously. Doing that, each participant stays at his workplace at the computer.

Web conferencing which implies "unilateral" lecturer's speech and minimal feedback from the audience is called webinar.

Videoconference is a field of information technology, providing simultaneous two-way transfer, processing, transformation and presentation of interactive information over a distance in a real time mode using hardware and software computer aids.

Coordinated actions in a videoconference mode are also called a videoconferencing session.

Videoconferencing is an interactive telecommunication technology of two or more remote users cooperation, which allows audio and video information interchange in a real time mode, including control data transmission.

Videoconferencing is used as a tool for prompt decision making in some situations; in emergency situations; to reduce travel costs in geographically distributed organizations; to improve efficiency; for trials with remote participation of convicts; and also as one of the elements of telemedicine and distance learning technologies.

In many organizations, video conferencing brings maximum effectiveness, namely:

  • - reduces the time for travel and related expenses;
  • - speeds up the decision making processes in emergency situations;
  • - reduces the time of trials in the courts of general jurisdiction;
  • - increases productivity;
  • - settles staffing issues and socio-economic situations;
  • - prevents fatigue and stress;
  • - allows to monitor market status and respond quickly to its changes;
  • - allows making more reasonable decisions by means of involving additional expertise if necessary;
  • - quickly and effectively allocates resources, and so on.

Conferencing is a communication service (function), providing simultaneous telephone conversation of three or more people (talkers).

Conferencing is used for group discussions, meetings or negotiations, in cases when interlocutors have no opportunity to meet personally, as well as in cases when the same problem is to be discussed with several telephone subscribers.

Using conferencing allows to save time resources, resulting in this service is widespread in the world.

Conferencing implies that:

  • - all talkers communicate by voice only (no other way of transferring information is provided, but speech);
  • - all talkers can speak and hear each other simultaneously (that is a duplex communication);
  • - participants use phones for communication (fixed location, mobile or software ones).

Business conference is a meeting of representatives of one or several companies to discuss the results of cooperation in business, the problems arising during the implementation of business ideas, the ways to solve these problems, improving cooperation. These meetings are usually held in conference halls with special equipment for conferences (projectors, screens, simultaneous interpretation systems, etc.)

Press conference is an organized meeting of journalists with the representatives of companies, organizations or individuals carried out when there is a socially significant news, and the organization, or a known person directly associated with this news wishes to give comments on it, which can be interesting and important to public.

Press conferences:

  • - are organized to provide the mass media with information and comments;
  • - are characterized by the possibilities of obtaining a first-hand information, verification of information and clarification of versions with the help of questions.

Generally, during a press conference, its participants respond to questions from journalists, directly or indirectly related to the subject of a press conference.
